Amy Schumer waxes philosophic about everything
from women in Hollywood to struggles with self-image. But in one of the book's
most personal and eye-opening sections, Schumer writes about being sexually
assaulted and enduring an abusive relationship. As part of the press tour for Lower
Back Tattoo, Schumer sat down with Howard Stern to discuss her experiences
and why she chose to speak out.
In her book, Schumer reveals she lost her
virginity when her then-boyfriend assaulted her while she was sleeping. Schumer
said she stayed with the boyfriend, and even reassured her assailant when he
felt remorseful. Still, she added, "it messed me up" and "my
trust issues are terrible."
"I think it's important to talk about
because it's made me feel less alone when other women have come forward about
being sexually assaulted," Schumer told Stern. "And also because it's
not this perfect rape. People want you to have been raped perfectly, and they
want you to be a perfect victim."
Schumer also talked to Stern about a past
relationship with a boyfriend who would verbally and physically abuse her,
adding that she's choosing to share her experiences in the hopes that it helps
raise awareness about domestic violence.
